🎭 Title
Innovation in the Time of Change: Doing Something Never Done Before

📑 Abstract
Drawing on over four decades at the forefront of computer graphics, visual effects, and digital production, Richard Chuang reflects on innovation during periods of extreme technological change. From pioneering early end-to-end CG pipelines and digital humans at Pacific Data Images and DreamWorks Animation to building remote, real-time, and distributed production systems, Chuang traces how creative workflows have continually adapted at major industry inflection points.
The talk connects these historical shifts to today’s generative AI revolution, positioning AI not as a replacement for creativity, but as the newest transformative tool in a long lineage of technological disruption. Through concrete production examples—from feature films and television to advertising and real-time content—Chuang examines how AI-driven workflows are radically reducing cost and time while introducing new challenges around authorship, signal-to-noise, sustainability, and creative control. Emphasizing practical lessons learned across art, engineering, and business, the session offers a forward-looking framework for artists, technologists, and studios navigating exponential change. The core message is simple but urgent: meaningful innovation requires embracing uncertainty, building collaborative end-to-end systems, and continually pushing oneself to do something never done before.
