The new year kicked off with great energy as members of the Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC) and the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) embarked on a vibrant two‑day cross‑campus visit to HKUST(GZ). Organized jointly with the Computational Media and Arts (CMA) Thrust of the Information Hub at HKUST(GZ), the trip brought together students and faculty members from HKUST Clear Water Bay and Guangzhou campuses for meaningful interaction and exchange. The delegation was also joined by Prof. Hongbo FU, Acting Head of AMC, whose participation further underscored the importance of cross‑campus collaboration and academic connection.
The delegation started with a tour at the HKUST(GZ) Visitor Center, interacting with immersive facilities and VR gadgets as they were introduced to the projects and research being conducted at the top-notch facilities situated at the HKUST(GZ) campus. Their journey next brought them on an enriching visit to the Guangzhou Museum of Art, exploring a wide range of traditional artworks, historical pieces, and curated exhibitions. The visit provided a deeper understanding of Guangzhou’s cultural heritage and added valuable context to the cross‑campus experience.
Following the rich cultural experience, participants visited 37 Interactive Entertainment, a leading game company in Mainland China known for its diverse portfolio of online and mobile games. The visit included an engaging internship and career-sharing session, where students learned about exciting opportunities in areas such as game design, engineering, narrative development, UI/UX, and project coordination. The open discussion offered valuable insights into entering the gaming industry and understanding multidisciplinary roles within a game studio, and participants gained a clearer picture of how interdisciplinary skills can translate into roles within a game studio—bridging university learning with real-world creative and technical practices.
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was the outdoor VR immersive tour at HKUST(GZ). Students stepped into an augmented reality tour of the campus using VR headsets, transforming familiar surroundings into an interactive digital layer of information and storytelling.
The 2026 AMC & EMIA Cross‑campus Visit further reinforced bonds between HKUST’s Clear Water Bay and Guangzhou campuses. Through research sharing, cultural exploration, lab visits, and interdisciplinary dialogue, participants strengthened relationships and gained valuable insights that support future collaboration and academic development.
