Crafting Heritage: A Journey into traditional Chinese Paper Craft in Kam Tin Heung

2025-12-22

As part of an AMC Special Interest Group (SIG) project Folded Memory, three MA in AMC students (Kedi DONG, Zhuli PAN, and Lisha ZHANG) are working together on utilizing AI technology in reimagining the traditional Jiao Festival (太平清醮) and relevant Chinese paper craft. To deepen their understanding, on November 30 2025, the team visited Kam Tin Heung, one of the historic walled villages in the New Territories, where preparations are underway for the once-in-a-decade Jiao Festival—a tradition with over 340 years of history dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

With the generous guidance of Hong Kong artist TANG Kwok Hin, himself a descendant of the Tang Clan of Kam Tin Heung, the students gained valuable insights into the making of traditional Chinese paper crafts, the construction of the bamboo theatre, and the broader cultural significance of these practices. This project exemplifies how technology and cultural heritage can come together in an interdisciplinary approach, fostering new forms of creativity at the intersection of tradition and innovation.
